This painting illustrates the covenantal love between God and His people. Eve’s signature leaves outline a handshake between God and Man, through a waterfall symbolizing a veil. The hand formed by golden leaves belongs to Jesus, with a rose depicting His nail-pierced hand, while that formed by green leaves belongs to Man. The firm handshake represents their covenant relationship.
The scroll depicts part of Michelangelo’s ‘Creation of Adam’, which shows the Old Testament relationship between God and Adam – while God passionately reaches out to His creation, Adam is less eager to reciprocate, symbolized by Adam’s arm limply resting on his knee.
As the scroll is rolled away to give way to a firm handshake, this represents that the old has passed and the new has come- God’s covenantal relationship with Man is here to stay.
