Self Evolving

Exhibition Dates: 30 September 2006 to 24 November 2006

Artist Statement:

After the success of her two exhibitions, both titled ‘Self Unveiled’, which examined the subject of identity and the ‘true’ Self, Eve Ong has returned for her third solo exhibition. This exhibition is titled ‘Self-Evolving’, and goes on to explore the ‘true’ or hidden Self.

Individuals typically assume a façade when they interact with the world. This façade is a social camouflage, put on in order to blend seamlessly into society. This, of course, may not be a true reflection of the true personality of the individual.

This ‘social facade’ is usually slowly built-up by the individual so in order for that individual to assimilate into a particular social environment. It can change or be altered, for example when surrounding conditions change, the individual changes along with it. The question then is whether these changes will seriously affect the personality in the long run?

These works in this exhibition use nature as a base to create a surrealistic environment as a backdrop for the Self. The question of whether these core values lie in the self or in the world shall be explored in the artworks. To appreciate the works, the viewer needs to first locate the Self within the painting before they can be enlightened by the concept for the work.

Some works even allow the viewer to see how the hidden Self evolves or comes into perspective when artworks are viewed from many directions or perspectives either on the left or right side of the artworks.
