Covenantal Love


This painting illustrates the journey of God’s covenantal love with humanity — from creation, through redemption, to restored partnership.

The scroll depicts part of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, representing the Old Testament relationship between Father God, our Creator, and mankind. In the scene, God is passionately reaching out toward Adam, representing His deep desire to connect with His creation. However, Adam’s hand is depicted as relaxed and hesitant, resting on his knee, symbolizing humanity’s incomplete response and reluctance to fully reciprocate God’s invitation.

As the scroll rolls away, it reveals the fulfillment of this relationship through Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn, granting humanity direct access to God’s presence. The waterfall symbolizes this veil, and through it emerges not Adam’s hesitant hand, but Jesus’ golden hand formed by leaves, marked with a rose representing His nail-pierced hand.

The green leaf hand represents mankind, reaching out and firmly holding the golden hand of Jesus. This handshake signifies the restoration of covenant relationship — no longer a distant Creator reaching toward His creation, but God and humanity united in partnership through Christ.

The painting reflects that the old has passed and the new has come: through Jesus, we are invited into an everlasting covenant of love, intimacy, and partnership with God.
